At Morelock, we are more than a business; we are family. Discover our story.
IN 1962, THE hum of engines FILLED THE AIR AS DON MORELOCK MANEUVERED HIS TRUCK ALONG THE winding roads, THE RHYTHMIC VIBRATIONS OF THE WHEELS SERVING AS A comforting backdrop TO HIS THOUGHTS.
Each mile he traveled was driven by a desire to provide for his wife, Jerrie, and their four young children. The weight of responsibility rested on his shoulders, but Don was determined to make a better life for his family.
One afternoon, Don made a delivery to a local fiberglass roofing company. The sprawling industrial complex was filled with the sounds of machinery and echoes of hardworking men. That day, as he unloaded his cargo, he met a worker, who was intensely focused on his task. Don couldn't help but notice the man’s bandaged hand, a stark contrast to the heavy tools he wielded.
Don approached the man and learned that just a few weeks prior, he had tragically lost three fingers to a jigsaw while creating corrugated molding, which was the material used beneath fiberglass panels. As they talked, an idea began to unfurl in Don’s mind—an idea that could transform the labor-intensive process and potentially save others from similar misfortunes.
Back in his garage, amid the clutter and remnants of family projects, Don set to work. He spent countless nights tinkering and toiling, driven by a vision of creating a machine that could streamline the milling of corrugated molding, or as he lovingly called it, "wiggle wood". It was a labor of love forged in the quiet hours when the world around him was asleep. After several revisions, he finally unveiled the first corrugated milling machine, a contraption he hoped would revolutionize the industry.
Within months, Don was running his newfound invention part-time, blending his duties as a truck driver with his burgeoning business. A few years later, the Morelock family took a leap of faith and moved to West Linn, Oregon. Here, they transformed a dilapidated prohibition-era cockfighting barn into a thriving woodshop.
The sounds of their children's laughter mingled with the whirring of machines as the couple juggled family life and entrepreneurship. With their corrugated molding machine, the business flourished, and their commitment to craftsmanship attracted both local and larger companies.
In 1978, as their children grew and sought new adventures, the Morelocks followed them to Bend, Oregon. The landscape was different, but the spirit of determination remained steadfast. They expanded the business beyond corrugated molding, venturing into cedar paneling and an array of wood products. Each new offering was infused with the same dedication to quality that had driven Don from the very start. As decades rolled on, Morelock Wood Products weathered the cyclical storms of growth and recession. Through it all, the core values of innovation, quality, and customer service fortified their place in the wood products industry. Community members marveled at the resilience of the family, who had turned a simple idea into a beloved business.
On quiet evenings, with his face illuminated by the warm glow of the setting sun and a glass of red wine in his hand, Don often found himself lost in thought. He recalled the significant day at the fiberglass company, where a mere twist of fate led to a serendipitous encounter. It was a moment that sparked a profound journey, filling him with gratitude for the unexpected turn of events that had forever altered the course of his life.
Decades later, Don’s sons continue to carry on their family legacy, working alongside their children, brother-in-law, and even their young grandchildren. The air is filled with the comforting scent of freshly cut wood, reminding everyone of the journey that began with a simple idea driven by necessity. One man’s spark of inspiration has blossomed into a thriving family business, igniting the passion of future generations. This is the very essence of the Morelocks’ enduring legacy.
